READ MORE »Welcome to our 2019 Christmas Home Tour! Traditions are a big part of what makes the Christmas season so special. For me, that includes Christmas decor and using the same items from year to year. So, my decor this year is very similar to last year – same stockings, garland, and nativity set. But, because I love to decorate, I had to change it up a bit. This year, I added more lights and more gold, and gave our house a Christmas “glow up.”
This is not my typical post – I’m not revealing a room makeover or sharing a DIY project. Instead, I’d like to tell the story of how I “discovered” my personal design style and how it helped me to decorate our home in a way that finally feels “right.”
But, this also is not a typical blog post explaining all the different design styles and giving a quiz so you can find yours. I’ve considered drafting a post like that (I think I even have a half-written one in my drafts folder), but something always stopped me from finishing. One reason is that there are a TON of posts like that out there. And some of them are very helpful, so why should I reinvent the wheel? The other reason, though, is that I don’t think we should pigeonhole ourselves into just one style.
That said, what I’ve learned is that it is helpful to get a sense of the styles you do like and what you like about them. Once you figure that out, it will make it much easier to shop for your home and decorate in a way that feels cohesive and intentional.
So, here’s my story.

In my first post on decorating shelves, I talked about how to select the items to put on your built in shelves. It’s been about a year, and I’ve restyled our living room shelves a few times since that first post. So, I thought I’d share a few more tips on how to decorate shelves that I’ve learned recently.
I had been feeling for a while that there was something missing above the open shelves in our kitchen. I considered adding some art or another shelf and then I realized – duh – sconces! The problem? There is a pocket door in that wall, and it would be challenging (if not impossible) to hardwire in sconces. The solution? Turn hardwired sconces into wireless sconces!

I’ve been working on the boys’ bedroom incrementally since we moved into our house in January 2017. My goal was to design a fun room that would grow with them. I think I can say that it’s finally done. I’m excited to show you the boys’ adventure themed bedroom (with a secret hideout), and give you some ideas and inspiration for decorating a kid’s room.
One of the quirky features of our otherwise traditional house is the bathroom on the second floor. It is a “jack-and-jill” bathroom, meaning that there are two different areas with sinks that share a common area with a toilet and bathtub (think “The Brady Bunch”). Today, I’m sharing the makeover of our jack-and-jill bathroom from a white-carpeted, purple-walled nightmare into a fresh, modern farmhouse space.

I have a love-hate relationship with Instagram, but the main thing I love (other than Scary Mommy) is that it’s a great place to discover inspiring designers.
