The azaleas are blooming and the AC is running, which means it’s spring in Florida. With Easter around the corner, I decided it was time to decorate our dining room for the new season. For this year’s tablescape, I was inspired by brass candlesticks that I found thrifting and the ferns growing abundantly in our yard.

My boys and I have fun shopping at thrift stores (for Gainesville locals, the Repurpose Project is their favorite). On a recent outing, I stumbled upon a shelf full of brass candlesticks that cost between 50 cents and $2! Needless to say, I cleared them out. And, they also had a box of white taper candles – score! (If you can’t find any at your thrift stores, you can pick some up online.)
We did not have a big freeze this winter, so the ferns that grow around our yard are plentiful. Ferns are nice to use for decorating because they last quite a while without any water. I gathered up a bunch to line the center of the table, tucked a sprig into each napkin, and tied with twine.
I’ve been inspired recently by some beautiful weddings featuring gauze napkins. I love the organic, natural look.
DIY No-Sew Gauze Napkins
I made the gauze napkins with cheesecloth that I purchased for $8. I cut the cloth into 18″ squares, hand washed each square, and then air dried. To create the frayed edge, I pulled some threads on the cut edges and tossed in the dryer on air fluff for a few minutes. There’s no need to iron, because the wrinkles are part of what make them look rustic and unfussy.
I’m a big fan of mixing whites, creams, and natural tones, so the unbleached cheesecloth worked for this tablescape. (Our dining table is a rubbed cream.)
You could also easily dye the cheesecloth, too. I have a lot of fabric left over, so I may try that for another occasion.
Our family has been hosting Easter for the past few years (you can see last year’s spring tablescape here). We look forward to seeing everyone around this table again soon!
