What do we all love when the new year rolls around? A good makeover, of course! So, today I’m sharing with you how I updated an old brown dresser with gray paint and brass hardware.
My boys had been making do with my husband’s old bachelor pad dresser in their room. I was looking for a new dresser for them, but needed to find one with enough drawers. Finally, I came upon this old dated dresser – for free – and it fit the bill. Except, of course, for the ugly brown stain and tacky drawer pulls.
The boys share gray bunk beds, so I looked for a gray paint that would coordinate. I chose Vintage Furniture Paint in Charcoal Grey. This is the same brand of paint I used to makeover my husband’s desk. It doesn’t require a separate primer or sealant and goes on easily with a sponge roller.
(I’m able to purchase the paint a local home decor shop in Gainesville, Sawdust Dreams. If you don’t have such access, this paint and this paint look to be a similar color. I haven’t used either brand, though, so be sure to read the reviews!)
I removed the old hardware, took out the drawers, and gave it two coats of paint. To help prevent chipping and give time for the paint to fully cure, I left the dresser and drawers alone for a couple weeks after painting. Because my boys can be rough, I also added a couple coats of sealant on the top of the dresser, lightly sanding between each coat.
I replaced the old hardware with some modern brass drawer pulls. They are sturdy and easy for the boys to grab.
Finishing the boys’ room is one of my New Year’s resolutions that I hope to share with you soon. If you’re looking to update your home this new year, painting a dated old piece of furniture is an easy fix!

Thanks! And, yes, I remember you re-painting my old four-poster bed. Sounds like a good hobby to pick up again!
