The guest room was just a plain yellow box with pink closets and dirty white carpet. There is not a bathroom attached to this room, but there is a jack-and-jill bathroom across the hall for guests to use.
Don’t you just want to sink your bare feet into that carpet??
The guest room gets tons of light and has a great view of the lake, so I really wanted to create a bright and welcoming retreat for our guests. The entire second floor of the house was carpeted, so we removed all that carpet and installed white oak floors throughout to match the floors in the rest of the house. With new floors and white paint, the room began to feel like a more inviting space.
The guest room is home to some very special pieces of furniture. The little chair serving as a nightstand was my grandmother’s. Her hope chest is also in the room, under a window, and is the perfect spot for guests to rest their bags.
The four-poster bed was my mom’s childhood bed, and then my childhood bed. It was originally white, but I freshened it up with some blue chalk paint.
I wanted something simple to fill the large wall opposite the closets. So, I took a quote from one of my favorite Paul Simon songs, “Father and Daughter,” found a font that I liked, and had two 24 x 36 engineering prints made and mounted on foam board. I found the wood frames at a thrift shop, refinished them, and attached the prints. Voila! Giant wall art for about $40.
