When we bought the house, the living room had a water feature – the ceiling! So, the first thing we did immediately after closing was put on a new roof and replace the ceiling. After that, we began updating the main living space, which includes the living room, a breakfast nook, and a sun room.
The space has really beautiful original woodworking, including built-ins, crown molding, chair rail, and picture molding. But, despite an entire wall of windows, it felt dark, because of the deep brown wood floors, mauve walls, yellow trim, and teal green shelves (can’t forget about those). At least it all coordinated with the kitchen wallpaper.
We believe the sunroom was added on at some point, because it’s the only way to explain this awkward room divider in the middle of the space. It does give the space some interest, though.
After the “water feature” was removed, every surface was lightened and brightened. We re-finished the hardwoods throughout and fell in love with the light natural wood tones of the white oak floors. So, after they were sanded down, we opted not to add a stain and went with just a satin finish.
After sampling about 10 different shades of gray, we chose Sherwin Williams Agreeable Gray for the walls, which I think is the perfect warm gray. We painted all the trim in Sherwin Williams Westhighland White.
We gave the fireplace a facelift by replacing the dingy peach tiles with light gray limestone tiles set in a herringbone pattern. We also painted the interior of the fireplace with a high-temperature resistant black paint.
One corner of the sunroom is a nice sunny spot for flipping through a book and is about the only place I can get our fiddle leaf fig to grow. The other corner is still a work in progress.
Previously, there was not a light fixture in the breakfast nook. Just an ugly old fan. So, we installed this lovely chandelier from Pottery Barn made from recycled glass. I really wanted a light fixture that would add visual interest, but wouldn’t obstruct the view of the lake out the back window.
