There isn’t really a lot to say about the playroom before. It was just a blue rectangle with dark wood floors, and I’m sure it served as a formal living room for the prior owners. But, we had no need for a formal living room. With as many toys and as much energy as our boys have, what we needed was a playroom.
I’m not living in a dream world. I know that 99% of the time, this room is going to look like it was hit by a tornado. But, I at least wanted it to be pretty, since it’s one of the first rooms you see when you walk in the house, across the foyer from the dining room. And, I wanted the colors to tie in with the rest of the house. It turned out to be one of my favorite spaces in our home.
The only big thing that we bought for this room was the area rug. Everything else we had or we made. I love the rug because the color is a fun blue, but it’s not a kids rug, per se. It’s soft enough to sit on, but thin enough that a matchbox car can still roll across. The only drawback is that the pattern can sometimes camouflage legos, so I’ve stepped on my fair share, which is a special kind of torture.
The artwork displays are made from old wooden window screens that I found at my favorite local thrift store. I painted the wood and attached some hooks. We also made the boys’ desk from wood crates that I stained brown and a piece of wood that I painted with chalkboard paint. It’s just the right height for them to sit and draw. The chairs are vintage school chairs that I painted with chalk paint.
These are two of my favorite shots of the boys, showing off their dimples when they were each about 6 months old. I got them printed with a Groupon from Printerpix, and I couldn’t be happier with how they turned out.
