We got a tiny taste of fall in Gainesville this weekend (as in, for a couple hours one night, the AC did not kick on), but it was enough to motivate me to decorate our front door for my favorite season. I’ve got some tips for how you can get your front entry looking festive, too!
1. Tons of Mums
Mums are the quintessential flowering plant of fall. They come in yellow, orange, white, and maroon, so you can mix and match, or stick to one color. They’re also hardy, easy to care for, and relatively inexpensive. My kind of plant!
2. Stack Up Some Pumpkins
What better way to welcome the harvest season than with pumpkins?? I’ve been loving these heirloom pumpkins with their muted orange, green, and white tones. We picked these up at one of our favorite pumpkin patches in Gainesville, “Buy a Pumpkin, Feed a Child.” We also got a big, traditional orange pumpkin that we’ll use for our jack-o-lantern, but it’s hanging out inside for now, away from the elements – and the raccoons.
3. Hay Bales for Height
I placed a small hay bale on each side of the door to add texture and another nod to the season. But, it was also a way to add some height and show off the mums a bit more. I got these hay bales at Hobby Lobby (hint – all their fall decor is 40% off right now).
4. Spooky Decorations
If Halloween isn’t your thing, you can definitely skip the decorations. But, since I’m living with two little boys who are counting down the days (and changing their minds about their costume every day, too), some spooky decorations were a must for our front door. They like the spiders the best. I used a combination of suction cup hooks and tape to stick-up those bad boys.
Another plus of spooky decorations? They come in handy for playing pranks on your kids. I’m just saying, if one of those spiders just happened to crawl up under their covers, it might give them a good scare. (Who am I kidding – it definitely gives them a good scare. I heard the screams from down the hall. Unfortunately, it didn’t scare them into making their beds the next day…)
5. Layer on the Rugs
It might still be too warm for layered clothing, but it’s always the right time for layered rugs! I’ve liked the recent decor trend of layering an accent rug under a doormat. It’s an easy way to add color and texture. I placed a black and white throw rug under a festive Halloween doormat. (I snagged mine at Bealls Outlet for $7!)
I also got a Thanksgiving doormat, so once it’s November, I can swap them out, take down the spooky decorations, and already be decorated for the next holiday.
(And, yes, my son’s first reaction was to say “smell my feet,” so here they are. They’re cute, but after a long day at school, they could raise the dead.)
